Workflow control
Execution that holds.
Workflow control is execution that holds without supervision. Work moves through defined states with named owners, handovers either complete or surface as exceptions, and the evidence of what happened is produced by the work rather than reconstructed afterwards. Audit-readiness becomes a property of the design.
The executive problem
Where it shows up.
- Very little fails inside a department. It fails between two of them.
- The process document and the actual process parted company years ago.
- Proving what happened costs a week of people's time, every time someone asks.
What ControlArc designs
Five things that exist when the work is done.
- Defined states for the work, with the conditions to enter and to leave each one.
- Named ownership at every handover, including the gaps nobody currently owns.
- Exception routes for the work that does not fit, so the workaround has a home in the design.
- Evidence produced by the work itself: who did what, when, and on what basis.
- Controls proved against the volumes the business actually runs, not the volumes it plans for.
What changes for leadership
Before, and after.
Handovers fail quietly in the space between two teams
The handover completes, or it surfaces as an exception
The workaround is invisible and load-bearing
The exception route is designed, named and measured
Proving what happened is a week of reconstruction
The evidence exists because the work produced it
Where it bites hardest
Two industries where this is the whole problem.
- Construction, Property & InfrastructureClaims and variations slipping through.
- Business Process & Technology ServicesQuality drift between the SLA reports.

Questions
What leaders ask first.
Is this process mapping?
Process mapping describes the process as designed. This starts from the work as it actually happens, including the workarounds, because those are usually load-bearing.
Will this add steps for our people?
The intent is the opposite. Evidence produced by the work, rather than reconstructed afterwards, means less recording rather than more. Where a capture point is added, it is designed to replace something currently being done twice.
How is audit-readiness measurable?
By whether the evidence a review would ask for can be produced without a reconstruction exercise. That is a measurable property of the design rather than a claim about it.
What about the exceptions that fit no process?
They get a designed route. An exception with no home quietly becomes the process, which is one of the six patterns set out on the Method page.
The first step
None of this can be settled from outside your business.
The Operational Control Opportunity Review is where it starts: a bounded, paid, confidential diagnostic that establishes where your operating layer leaks, what that is costing, and what a designed layer would have to hold.
